Grammar Explorer -- installation and startup

Installation/Downloading

The Grammar Explorer is available as a standalone image for running on PCs under Windows95 or WindowsNT.

It should be downloaded as a single compressed tar file. This compressed tar-file is 6.4Mb. A more uptodate of the grammar explorer is currently being made; please contact me if you need it. There are also some pointers on the main KPML page (see below).

After downloading, the file should be uncompressed and untarred. This will produce a directory called `dist' which can be renamed and placed anywhere on your local machine.
The directory contains four files: two support files for Lisp, the implementation language of the Grammar Explorer, a support file for KPML, and the Grammar Explorer image itself (which is around 20Mbyte).

One of the Lisp support files is called `lisp.exe'. This should be clicked on in order to start the Grammar Explorer: a menu will be brought up allowing you to select grexplorer.img as the program to perform.

Startup

The Grammar Explorer is built on top of  the KPML grammar development environment and so the first thing that appears when the image is started is the root KPML window. For the purposes of the Grammar Explorer the only thing to do here is to click on the main button marked Launch Development Windows near the bottom of the window; there is no need to investigate the other options available in the menu offered in this window since the Explorer comes with all necessary grammars and other linguistic resources preloaded. It is possible to load alternative grammars, etc. here in the normal way supported by KPML but this is not described in this documentation.

On selecting the Launch Development Windows button, a welcome message is brought up. Clicking OK on this message proceeds to bring up the KPML Development window and the Grammar Explorer window in quick succession. The Grammar Explorer is a specialization of the KPML coder and so its window is headed: "KPML `Rank and Axis' CODER". Once this window is open you are ready to start exploring the grammar as described in the main documentation and illustrated in the example of use.
