Copyright letter This letter is for use to ask for copyright clearance from industrial users. Please cut and paste into your chosen word processor and replace the text in capitals with the relevant information. Dear NAME, I wonder if you would be able to help me with a copyright question regarding THE PUBLICATION. I am involved in a research project at the University of Stirling/East London/Bremen, funded by the British Government agency the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) on electronic and paper document design. Our aim is to build and annotate a corpus of publications for research use with features of their design, so that we and other researchers can look at them and see how the designs vary. We are particularly interested in getting examples of good publications of range of genres. I have been talking to NAME in YOUR ORGANISATION'S NAME about the design of your publications, and I am particularly interested in getting some examples of PUBLICATION to use as part of our data. Would you be able to give me permission to do this? It would involve: • photographing or
scanning selected pages of PUBLICATION and putting them on a PC database
for our research use We believe that this would constitute 'fair dealing' under the copyright act, as the institutions involved in the research are academic and we would be using the pages as research data on design. Do you think this would be OK? If so, we would really appreciate a letter to this effect, addressed to the project manager, Dr Judy Delin, Department of English Studies, University of Stirling, Stirling FK9 4LA. We can then keep this on file and know that the corpus has been cleared for the purposes listed above. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions about the research, or the corpus and its use. I enclose a flyer about the project for your further information. With thanks and best wishes
