Dear NAME,

I am writing to inform you of a research project on the visual appearance of printed and electronic documents that has just begun at the University of Stirling/Bremen/East London (DELETE WHERE APPLICABLE), in collaboration with THE OTHER TWO. The research is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. We are very interested in finding out from practising designers why their documents look the way they do. It is hoped that this will be an interesting process for designers themselves, as it encourages them to review and reflect upon the decisions leading to the ultimate appearance of their publications.

We are choosing a small number of publications to include in our study, based on their standing as good examples of their type/innovative approach to design DELETE WHERE APPLICABLE. We hope you will be willing to talk to us about the possibility of including PUBLISHER OR PUBLICATION in our study. Initially, we would just like to meet for a brief chat about what the main design features are, and why it looks the way it does.

I enclose a flyer that describes our project a little further. I would be very grateful if you could let me know if you would be able to talk to us.

I look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes
