Dear Mr. Doe;

It is clear from the answers you gave in the questionnaire about smoking
that you have reached the point where you would really like to stop
smoking. It doesn't sound as though you are really enjoying your
cigarettes any more, but mainly smoke when you are bored. I notice that
you did suceed in stopping for a short time at one stage, using a number
of aids such as nicotine gum or patches, and stop smoking classes. You have
obviously thought very seriously about stopping smoking, and want to have
another go at stopping soon.

You are quite right in thinking that this time you may be successful.
>From your answers, you sound quite a determined person, and although
your previous attempt at stopping wasn't permanent, most people who
eventually stop smoking have one or two attempts before they succeed.
Indeed, there are about a million people in Scotland who have stopped
smoking, and most of them found it easier than they had expected, once
they made up their minds to stop.

The two essentials to stopping smoking are that you must want
to stop, and that you must believe that it is possible. In your case, I
think you have just about reached the point of both wanting to stop, and
believing you can. All that you need to do now is to choose a day,
perferably within the next week, when you can start stopping. If you have
been to classes you will already know a lot about what to do - I think
myself that it is best to choose a day, then when you wake up try to
resolve not to have a cigarette for the first half hour. When that is up,
try to avoid having a cigarette for another half-hour, and so on. Soon
you will find that dinner-time gas come without any smoking, then tea-time,
and all day. Usually special aids are not required - most people stop
smoking without them - but if you are finding it really difficult, nicotine
patches or gum may give you a little further help. Don't look too far
ahead, just go little by little, keep busy, take exercise, nibble a bit
of fruit, and keep thinking of how much better you will feel as a
non-smoker, with more money to spend, cleaner, healthier, and helping
the family as well.

I hope this letter will help you to get started with stopping soon.

Best wishes,
