NLG Methodologies

A variety of methodologies have been applied in NLG work. These are the kinds of approaches adopted to the study and construction of models of the generation process. Three of these can be characterized loosely as `horizontal' methods, `vertical' methods, and `whole system' methods. A further set focuses on issues of process and control rather than on primarily linguistic phenomena or linguistic resources. There is naturally a relationship between the methodology adopted and the techniques preferred for constructing accounts.
