Two full positions (doctoral or postgraduate) are available immediately at the UNIVERSITY OF BREMEN in the area of ontological engineering. Under the usual conditions of job release the positions will be available for the period 1.1.2008 until 31.12.2010. The positions will be associated with the Department of Applied Linguistics and Computational Linguistics and will work in close cooperation with the Ontology Group of the Transregional Collaborative Research Center “Spatial Cognition” (SFB/TR8). Responsibilities of the positions include the development and evaluation of formal ontologies and their application within a large EU-funded project for developing and integrating a broad range of services for ‘young elderly’ and ‘elderly’ people. The ontologies developed in the project must be formally defined and supportive of application in real-world systems. Successful candidates will need to carry out advanced research in ontological development and to interact with industrial partners for ontology application.Successful candidates will be expected to participate in the research and development of the Bremen Ontology Research Group and to represent Bremen in ontology-related research projects and research networks (ECOR, NCOR, JCOR, etc.). The ontology group works particularly closely with the Collaborative Research Center SFB/TR8 “Spatial Cognition” and candidates will also be expected to contribute to common lines of research.
Due to the double anchoring of the tasks in both ontology research and practical application with the involvement of industry, successful candidates will be ideally placed to pursue subsequent careers in both research and practical application. Candidates are welcome both at doctoral and post-doctoral level.

Salary is according to the German Federal pay scale (TV-L 13, starting approx.
€ 34,000). The position is available from January 2008 until the end of
