Regular
attendance of the main session. If you miss
any sessions without a written excuse or if you miss more than
three sessions total without prior arrangement, you will not
be admitted to the final exam. Attendance will be measured in
a number of ways.
Thorough
preparation of the readings for each session. The
chapters that are relevant are clearly indicated in the relevant
information for each week.
Completion
of all homework exercises and regular attendance of a tutorial.
Tutorials are obligatory and are an essential part
of making sure that you are on track with the material covered
in the course. Waiting until the end of the course before finding
out that you have not understood how to do something will be
too late. Much of linguistics is to do with practice and the
tutorials are where you can make sure that you are getting enough!
Participation
in experiments. From
time to time you will be given the opportunity to participate
in linguistic experiments of various kinds run by members of
the university. These are generally good fun and give an indication
of some of the directions empirical research can take. This
is a proper part of the course and so you should make
sure you attend at least one experiment lasting at least one
hour during the semester. Some experiments are quite short: in
this case you may need to do two to make up your full hour!
Successful
participation in the final exam. To
successfully complete the course you must obtain a pass grade
in the final exam. The exam is based
on the reading package, the material covered in classes, the
extra background readings, and the tutorials.
