For example, here is the
International Phonetic Alphabet that we will
hear more of when we do phonetics
and phonology and which you should already have seen used
in any good dictionary: chart.
Strangely enough, it is not as frightening as it might appear!
A very thorough overview
of the changes in the sounds of English from
even before its origins to the modern day is given in this Wikipedia
entry.
Some additional introductory
linguistics overheads from Randy Allen Harris (U. Waterloo)
on most of the subjects that we have addressed in the course
can be found here.
(Make sure that you use the pdf versions on this site and not
the 'pps' versions, as these latter might not have the right
fonts for you... this is particularly noticeable in the phonetics
and phonology overheads!).
