Example texts for Theme/Subject/Transitivity analysis
Dear M&D,
tomorrow’s an early rise because we failed our last inspection so tomorrow morning we have to get up at 5am to prepare the unit for 6am inspection. Yesterday was the Combined School Sports—fun to be in. I ran about 2.13, which wasn’t too bad as it was may second race for the season. Today we walk up Mt Stirling. Then tomorrow we have 10 hours of orienteering. What fun! I’d better get some sleep.

How do the following two texts work and where does do they come from?
Soon the way levels out. Every pace immerses you further in the countryside. Some 10 minutes from the road, ignore a turning left and keep walking through the olive groves and vineyards. A minute later, where a well-concreted track leads up right and a rough track goes left just ahead of you, keep straight ahead on the main track. Shortly after this ‘crossroads’, it looks as if your track runs out, but it goes steeply downhill and narrows to footpath for a few metres/yards, where it crosses a watercourse and goes up the other side, soon passing some fig trees.
The route flattens out, offering more views into the ravine. Continue beside the water gulley. The way appears to fork here in front of the trough; go right. Beyond here the way is very steep and rough; you need to be sure-footed. At a boulder marked with red arrows, the path forks. On the left you pass through a wire gate almost immediately. At the next T-junction turn left and cross a small concrete bridge.
How do the two following texts differ, particularly in the there thematic choices? Which text would be rated higher if it were the answer to an exam question?
I think governments are necessary because if there weren’t any there wouldn’t be any law and people would be killing each other. They help keep the system in order for certain things. If there wasn’t any federal government there wouldn’t be anyone to fix up problems in the country. It’s the same with the state governments. If the state governments didn’t exist there wouldn’t be anyone to look after the schools, vandalism and fighting would occur every day. The local government is important to look after rubbish because otherwise everyone would have diseases.
In Australia there are three levels of government, the federal government, state governments and local governments. All of these levels of government are necessary. This is so for a number of reasons. First the federal government is necessary for the big things. They keep the economy in order and look after things like defence. Similarly the state governments look after the middle-sized things. For example they look after law and order, preventing things like vandalism in schools. Finally, local governments look after the small things. They look after things like collecting rubbish, otherwise everyone would have diseases. Thus for the reasons above we can conclude that the three levels of government are necessary.
