Material will be placed here during the course; this will include both pointers to further readings and texts for analysis. The website does not replace the course and will only include additional or supportive material.

To begin, we need some basic tools for analysing texts, for taking them apart into their constitutive bits and pieces, so as to examine more closely how they are working. The readings describing the basic tools are in the copyshop on campus. They are in the folder named "Functional Grammar Basics" with my name on it. The introductory reading relevant for this course is as follows.

The following texts contain basic information about how to recognise and divide up clauses for a functional analysis. This is a prerequisite for all further work. They are ordered in increasing detail.

The following, more extensive, chapter contains the first split of structure according to different language functions, or metafunctions.

Basic Grammatical Resources for Appraisal and Interpersonal Meaning

These chapters provide more detailed views of the structures that belong to the interpersonal metafunction.

Two texts to practise your understanding of the above are here (Text A) and here (Text B).
