Poems and Pints on 24. November 2005

Once more newleaf and the Irish Pub Schnoor offer their audience the opportunity to combine three of the world's most pleasurable things: literature, music and Guinness. Acoustic music by Christian Jansen, the cosy atmosphere in the Irish Pub Schnoor and newleaf authors presenting their latest poetry create the perfect diversion for a dark November night.
Light up your autumn on Thursday, 24th November 2005, 8 pm, free entry.

New book by Uche Nduka

Yeti Press have just announced the publication of a new book by newleaf regular Uche Nduka. Heart's Field is a collection of 94 new poems in English mostly revolving around the subjects of love, writing and politics and – as always with Nduka’s work – with an ever-original erotic slant:

39

straight from a bag
of fetishes. you bagged
my world before i could
correctly pronounce your name.
no hassles. and we became
each other’s work-in-progress
we unpinned fig leaves from our crotches
and denied neither bloodstains nor inkstains.
our four nipples burned hilariously
within the three lines of a nightly triangle.

Heart's Field costs 10 € and is available at all good bookshops: ISBN 3-9805640-8-8

newleaf author wins prize

Good news: newleaf events manager Julia Scheit, who's currently studying at Liverpool Hope, has just won second prize in the Kulturhauptstadt 2010 Poetry Competition. She travelled over to Germany from Liverpool for the award ceremony. The poem which won is "Between Home" and is in four languages. It has already been earmarked for publication in newleaf 19, which will be published in June 2005. The bad news is that the Kulturhauptstadt 2010 Poetry Competition was not in Bremen, but in Essen. Julia is a Ruhrpottmädel, as she says in the German section of the poem. So why doesn't Bremen ... ah well. (1st March 2005)

Book by newleaf editor

One of our copy editors, Helmut Stapel, a freelance journalist who sells and publicises newleaf in Bremerhaven (aka The Colonies) has also produced a book of his own: it's called Kopfstand: Ein- und Ausfälle von Helmut Stapel and is published by Verlag Wilhelm Böning in Nordenham. Congratulations, Stopel!

Sad news: a newleaf chapter closes

January 2005. For various reasons, Angela Schmidt-Küppers has had to close her pub "bei Lilli und Walter", established and run by her mother, where we had that lovely reading in May 2004. She's pretty certain that this is permanent, so we're not too optimistic about appearing there again. The pub, which had been a permanent feature in the Pusdorf landscape for forty years, will be sadly missed by the regular customers and the local community. Angela, newleaf says thanks again.

Special Edition

January 2005 saw a new special edition, part one of three named Pretty in a Jar by Karsten W.N. Kurze, which was available free with newleaf 18 and which should satisfy your thirst for the unexplainable. When all three parts of the story have been published in hard copy and given to our regular readers, it will be available here on our web site.

newleaf to co-operate with Sirena magazine

In January 2005, Jorge R. Sagastume, editor of the US tri-lingual magazine Sirena visited Bremen. In discussions with newleaf, possibilities for closer co-operation between the two magazines were mooted. We are of course very interested in working more closely with this beautifully produced publication, which has so far produced only two issues, but these are both stunning. The magazine's concept is internationalist and has just completed a big distribution deal with John Hopkins University Press. Check out or sister Sirena on the net.
