There are several assignment possibilities; for example:

compare the dynamically generated webpages from some of the online NLG systems we looked at and try and see what is 'added' by the fact that they have been generated 'on demand' rather than being written in advance. How do they respond to the particular sequence of looking at pages (something that can only be determined by the person clicking, not really knowable in advance). How could they be made even more 'dynamic'? What could that mean? Is it a good thing? Does it bring any problems?

compare the multilingually generated texts (e.g., from TEMSIS) with texts produced by machine translation. What are the differences?
- take a small example grammar of the kind that we have been generating
with, and explore just what it can generate and what it cannot. Then carry
out extensions of that grammar so that it can generate more: either in
English or any other language that you care to look at. Your result would
then be a new grammar network. In your assignment, you would describe
the changes that you made and how what choices lead to what sentences.
You will need to motivate any decisions you make in building your grammar.
To do this work, you will need the basic program as used in the first
lab session: i.e., the first one described in the first
tutorial.
A good grammar to do this with is the following is one called 'TRANSITIVITY' in the basic examples contained here. This is a zip-file, unzipping the file will give you two of the simple grammars that we started with in the lab sessions, plus the grammar called 'TRANSITIVITY'. A tutorial introduction of what is in this grammar is given here; a short introduction to what is happening linguistically in this grammar is given on pp42-50 in Butt/Fahey/Spinks/Yallop's Using Functional Grammar: an explorer's guide--a copy of this for copying is in the envelope on my door (A3470).
Instructions for installing grammars: if you had not already downloaded the grammar 'TRANSITIVITY', then you will also need to tell KPML where to be able to find it. One way of doing this is described in the first tutorial that we did concerning the Titles grammar.This relies on you copying grammars to a floppy disk.
Another, slightly more complicated (but more professional!) way of telling the program where your grammars are is by changing the file kpmlconf.novice which should be placed in the same folder that you downloaded the KPML program to (possibly C:\temp). You have to change the first line of this file to show where the new grammar is. Save this file when you have changed it: make sure that its name is not changed! This is the only change that you need to make. After this you go to the
File menu in the Development window and click the option "Reload KPML configuration file", i.e., the one below the one highlighted in blue in this figure.
When you have done this, clicking again on Load Resources should show your new grammar in place.
