Born 1957, London, England. Working in Natural Language Generation since 1982.  Ph.D. (Artificial Intelligence) from Edinburgh University, 1986.  Worked in generation projects at Kyoto University (Prof. M. Nagao), USC/Information Sciences Institute (Penman Project), and the German National Research Center for Information Technology/IPSI (Komet Project: project leader).  Ttranslation science at the University of the Saarland, Saarbrücken. Lecturer in Computational and Descriptive Linguistics at the University of Stirling, Scotland.  Currently Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Bremen within the Department of English.

Main areas of interest and active research (with pointers to relevant papers, web information, etc.) include:

• multilingual natural language generation and descriptions,
• linguistically-motivated ontologies and their use in NLG,
• discourse structure,
• register, genre and text types,
• multimodal page generation and synergies across modalities, that are useful for generation,
• relations between functional linguistic descriptions (particularly systemic-functional linguistic) and
• its computational instantiation in generation systems and
• its formal instantiation in typed-feature descriptions,
• combined computational tools for teaching NLG and functional linguistics.

Substantial  tools, systems and resources  developed and available to the generation community include:

• the KPML grammar development environment for large-scale multilingual generation resources and generation, used in several larger generation projects for either grammar development or generation or both (e.g., Komet-PaVE, Drafter-I, GUME, Agile, HealthDoc, TechDoc, Isolde) and lots of smaller ones,
• the Generalized Upper Model, a multilingual linguistically-motivated ontology,
• a large bibliography of generation and functional linguistic references (bibtex format),
• a clearing house for several large systemic-functional generation grammars, including Penman's Nigel grammar for English (Matthiessen), Komet's German (Teich) and Dutch (Degand) grammars, French (Paris/Hartley), and others as they come available.
• the compleat list of natural language generation systems (with Michael Zock)
