We Happy Few
by Imogen Stubbs
We Happy Few takes the audience on a boisterous, sometimes hilarious journey – albeit one with moments of tragedy – as a group of seven women from a wide range of social backgrounds and vastly differing theatre experience tour through Britain during the Second World War, performing their own unique versions of Shakespeare’s plays to the ‘huddled masses’ in schoolrooms, pubs and factories to boost wartime morale. Their voyage of self-discovery leads them to learn the value of loyalty, mutual respect and true friendship as the bombs fall on Britain, as well as the power of laughter and music to counter the frightful news of loved ones’ deaths. While we sometimes laugh at or along with them, we are reminded of the effect of war on those ‘at home’ – and that war can be both mentally and physically closer than one might think, a lesson only too topical in recent years and at present.
The play offers an easy-to-understand story, simply told, with occasional sequences from Shakespeare as ‘jewels in the crown’ and the trademark Parlement of Foules mixture of script, song and dance. To misquote Polonius from Hamlet, “tragical-comical-historical-pastoral, scene individable, or poem unlimited; these are the only women”…
Tickets are available direct from the theatre, and cost €12 (€8 for pupils and students).
