Poems and Pints

The Irish Pub in the Schnoor was packed for the second newleaf Poems & Pints event on November 24th, 2005. And a couple of people were even there to listen to the reading, though many others had come to watch the Hamburger SV play Monaco in the UEFA cup (HSV lost by the way), to play cards or simply to relax with a pint of Guinness, Kilkenny or cider. But football was not only a hot topic at the back of the pub also at the front where Ian Watson read a few of his football poems. One of the poems was dedicated to Northern Irish football legend George Best, who in an eerie coincidence went to the great Elysian football field in the sky the very next day. Julia Boll and Silke Hartmann read a selection of prose and poetry dealing with the subjects of travel and being abroad. Tatjana Pfenning presented her Daniil Pashkoff prize winning story Devil May Care. Another perennial newleaf favourite, Hendrik Schäfer`s story About a Frog, was read by Florence Geiss. The reading was hosted by newleaf events manager Julia Scheit. Music was provided by Christian Jansen and his guitar. Christian soon had the entire pub singing along with him, even though it took him a moment to remember the tune of Hotel California.
